FOREIGN LANGUAGES PROGRAMME
We offer a wide-ranging programme of foreign languages: French, German, Italian and Spanish. Our tutors are able to help you choose the right level. Please ring 01273-422632 for further course information.
Our language course tutors will, at the first course meeting, check that you are at the right level.
NB In nearly all our languages courses you will work towards a qualification through the NATIONAL OPEN COLLEGE NETWORK (NOCN). This means that you will be assessed during your course on speaking, writing, listening and reading skills in your chosen language. Assessments will be carried out in class during your lesson time or as part of your homework. It is recommended that you should be prepared to do at least one hour’s homework each week.
Our courses are designed to help you progress. This may be towards a more formal examination; to help you use the language in your workplace; to gain new employment, or to enable you to communicate successfully when travelling.
The information below is intended to help you to choose which language course is best for you:
Year 1
For absolute beginners with no previous knowledge of the language. Level 1 NOCN award.
Year 2
For learners who have completed a Year 1 (60 hour) course or who have similar basic knowledge of the language, perhaps from school days. Level 1 NOCN award.
Year 3
For learners with a knowledge of the language gained through attendance at adult education classes for two years (120 hours) or equivalent. Level 2 NOCN award.
Year 4
For learners with a knowledge of the language gained through attendance at adult education classes for three years (180 hours) or equivalent. Level 2 NOCN award.
Year 5/7
For learners with a knowledge of the language gained through attendance at classes or similar for four or more years (240 hours) or equivalent. Level 2/3 NOCN award.
GCSE
As an alternative to OCN Level 2 (Years 3 upwards) you may wish to consider a GCSE.
AS LEVEL
For learners with a good pass at GCSE or a very good knowledge of the language.
